This is the first episode of my food show for Siren FM. Each week I aim to find out about cafes and restaurants and find out about the stories behind these places and the people running them. Along the way I will also be trying out some recipes and silly feature ideas too.

In this week’s programme I meet up with the owner of Thomas 2, Sarah Thomas, who talks about what it is like to run her own cafe. Also as we countdown to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee I’ve noticed the amount of food packaging with celebratory pictures and puns. I went to my local supermarket to count the number of Jubilee themed food products.

For the first interview for the show I went to one of my favourite cafes in Lincoln. Thomas 2 is based on St Swithins Square and boasts an impressive menu as well as an interesting variety of cakes.

The cafe started off as a family run place and now Sarah Thomas runs the establishment. I met up with her at the cafe to talk about how she comes up with her menu ideas as well as the importance of using local ingredients.

The Queen is celebrating 6o years on the throne this year. Gary Barlow is planning a concert in the Queen’s honour, but supermarkets are also celebrating the occasion in their own way. A number of food products either have special names or flavours to tie in with the Diamond Jubilee. To find out more I went round my local supermarket with Jonathan Cresswell.

You can listen to the show in full every Wednesday at 2pm on the community radio station Siren FM.

Making sense of the census

This documentary was created as part of my university degree. It is intended for young teenagers in Lincolnshire who might be learning about the census at school.

It may only be 40 questions that need to be answered every 10 years, but what is the census for?

Follow me as I start filling in my census and discover how the 10 year event is organised, how the answers from the forms are used to find out which parts of the country need more money and how important this document ends up being when people want to look into their family history.

Along the way it is revealed which famous Lincolnshire people are on the census and find out why the idea of people putting their religion as the Star Wars faith Jedi in a bid to make it a real religion was never going to work, as well as how the census may be forgotten about by the public after it has been sent back but 2021 census forms are already being prepared.

I also delve into the Lincolnshire Archives as they launch a new website called Lincs to the Past. It is a new way to publish their records online that are hidden away in the archives, museums and libraries and make them easily accessible.
